What is a book?

A book is a friend. Just like a true friend, a book won’t care how you look or what clothes you wear. It just tells its story to whoever will read it. The author uses the book to communicate important ideas. Honestly, I don’t really think that it matters how you read it. But I like books made out of paper. If Kindle’s are your thing, go for it. But, I will say that there is a special feeling when you actually finish a physical book. You can see the thickness of the book and how much time you have dedicated to reading it. I’m not really sure how to describe it, but there’s a certain sense of satisfaction having finished a physical book verses a digital book. I guess it just feels more real. Especially since digital books have become popular, you don’t know how long till there are no more books made of paper. I hate books on phones. I think this is because it just seems out of place on a phone. Kindles and ipads are okay, I have an ipad and I occasionally read a couple books on there. I can see why ipads might be easier for some people, because you don’t have to go out and buy the book. Still, I would personally prefer books. But there are also some downfalls to electronics too. Like if it runs out of charge. I agree with Nancy Jo Sales when she talks about what makes a book a book. The smell, the feeling, the look. It just makes it more special when you read out of a book than a device. I also agree with Joe Meno. He says that Plays and movies that appear on a screen leave little room for imagination. But, when you pick up a book you are free to imagine whatever you like. Not what the director or the people making the movie thought. I don’t hate devices I think they can be extremely useful. But when it comes to books I would prefer a good old paperback .

  1. I think your blog was very good and I agree with you that you don't get the full satisfaction from finishing a book on your digital device, but rather by finishing an actual paperback or hardcover book.

  2. I would have to agree with you, being able to read the physical book is special unlike using electronic books. I too, like to read the actual copy of a book but once in a while read on the ipad.

  3. I mostly agree with your premises, while paper back books may be simpler to navigate, a e-book could be just as helpful in the scheme of things. I mostly go on availability though.
